My teaching style has a balanced mixture of work and play. The work comes first and is always the forefront of each session. This will include warming up with long tone exercises, scales for balance and technique, sight reading and ear training. The play part means taking a break from the instrument, listening and discussing everything that we hear. It's a fun way to take their mind off of music assignments even though we're still practicing a form of ear training. Read More

I have been teaching for the last 14 years for other music schools as well as my home studio. I love to help new students from the ages of 4-99 in learning the joys of playing an instrument or instruments that they are going to enjoy. Nothing truly satifies me more than to see a student advance in their insturment as each lessons passes by. Daily quality and not quantity practice is something I like to encourage the student to be able to advance much faster in mastering the instrument. Read More

For beginners I like to start with Essential Elements 2000, although this book isn't specifically written with trumpet in mind, I do I want to get students making music as soon as possible and EE 2000 is a great start. As students advance I use some of the standard trumpet method books such as - Clarke Technical Studies, Arbans Complete Method for Trumpet, I also write out exercises that can't be found in books but feel will help the student progress. People don't realize how important daily consistency can be, even for a short span of time. As students grow and become more comfortable on the horn, I slowly start introducing more and more advanced concepts, while still giving them room to experiment on their own and discover their own interests. There are a few exercises that I will continue to enforce, but for the most part, I try to avoid pushing any student in a certain direction when it comes to repertoire because the most important thing is that they stay engaged and develop a passion for the music. Enthusiasm! Encouragement! Fun! And lots of patience. I'm an energetic and passionate teacher and my goal in teaching is to pass that energy and passion on to my students! I understand that setting realistic goals and moving at a comfortable pace are crucial steps to take in order for this to happen. I also like to provide historical context and break down the "why" behind songs we work on in terms of music theory and songwriting choices, so that students can truly get a grasp on the entirety of the work rather than simply memorizing notes. Everybody is different, and everyone responds to different types of motivation. As a teacher it is part of my job to find out what that is for each student. I believe that success breeds success, and starting with achieveable goals and realizing results will motivate and inspire a student, but there is also no getting around practice, you must put in the time on your instrument to be successful and to progress.
