I am a firm believer in "sound before sight" techniques at the very beginning. Students will learn strong fundamentals and start making a great sound that will encourage them to keep on playing. Eventually, written music is essential, and I tend to use a wide variety of printed books including various "band" methods (Essential Elements, Sound Innovations, etc.) I'm happy to work with whichever book students are required to have for their in-school lessons. I typically start with the Piano Adventures series with my beginner students who are children. I also introduce songs they are familiar with alongside seasonal or festival music to make the lessons more engaging and boost their interest in learning. For intermediate students, I add materials such as exercises from Hanon or Czerny to develop stronger technique. I pair these with music by various composers so that, while building the foundation of piano playing, my students explore different styles of music. Read More

I am a from a long line of musicians and grew up watching my parents lead music in folk bands. In my youth I sang in school choirs and performed in local musicals. In high school I learned music theory for guitar from a local teacher and immediately started playing at local coffee shops and street corners. In my twenties I traveled around the US playing. As a musician I have toured all through the east coast and have traveled west all the way to Montana.
