I like to discover each students reason for taking music lessons.Then,develop a plan that will help them achieve their goals.With younger students I feel it is best to stick to the method book's plan.With older and adult students you can be more flexible. In jazz,pop,rock and blues playing I try and help them develop a good "feel";whether playing chords or soloing.I also like to focus on improvisation,using chord scales and simple riffs to develop the student's own style.I like students to bring examples of what they are listening to so we can analyze the material together and discover what gives the music it's unique character. I graduated with a BA in Music with Initial State Teacher Licensure, and worked with a Boston-area Summer High School Band Program sponsored by Boston Latin School at Symphony Hall, working with the woodwind and percussion sections on sight-reading and part-preparation for their summer concert. I've taught guitar and piano part-time for over 12 years. If you are interested in a different method I will typically alter my teaching to accommodate. Early lessons typically work on establishing a strong technical foundation so the student will be able to pursue music that speaks to them. I typically use Piano Adventure or Little Mozart as a basis paring with other fun music materials depending on students age. Once the students reach a certain level, for example when they finish the level 3a of Piano Adventure, I start to add Hanon, Czerny, and Sonatina in turn, and prepare them to play in competition. For adult, I recommend choosing a repertoire they are might interested in, and I teach not only the fandamental of the piano plying but also guide how they can express. Read More
