I emphasize overall musicianship in addition to learning to the fundamentals of the particular instrument, splitting most lessons 50/50 between fundamentals on the instrument and musicianship skills such as music theory, sight-reading, sight-singing, playing by ear, and composition or improvisation. Understanding how exciting it is to play with accompaniment, I have played piano for multiple student recitals in order for them to learn collaborative skills as well. The piano is also a great way to teach harmony, music theory and improvisation because of its a visual and kinaesthetic elements.
