So many methods that I may tend to use. But generally having scale pages, etudes, maybe a ensemble/solo piece may help as well. I feel it is essential to develop skills before playing solo pieces, though slowly working through them is also tolerable. My methodology is inspired by the Suzuki method, which believes that learning music is similar to how humans learn to speak first, and write later. In the end, music is a type of language. Having said that, I always have a conversation with my students, and/or their parents, to learn what artists they listen to, what their favorite songs are and what goals they want to achieve. I have used Hal Leonard and Bastien. If the parent has a older method book they wish to use I start there and fill in as I see needed. I encourage a slow start to get all the basics understood, then progress at the student's own pace and interests. Handouts and charts are supplemented as most students can't afford all the music books requested in a series. If a student feels frustrated then a short walk from piano to the other side of the room shaking out the arms and fingers gets us back on track. Read More
