Overview:

I am a caring and motivating music teacher and I love using students gifts to help develop their musicianship goals. I graduated from the University of Arizona in December of 2019 with a Bachelor of Music Education. My greatest passion is playing and teaching Irish music because I was given the opportunity to study abroad while in college and fell in love with the music tradition. I have traveled and played flute and Irish Tin Whistle in many countries and I hope to inspire students to reach for what they are passionate about with open arms.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching flute when I was still in high school being a section leader who grew up with professional musicians as her band teachers. I taught sectionals and private flute lessons while in college and spent my free time traveling to schools within Tucson and my previous band teachers schools in Phoenix helping run sectionals and giving students tools to help themselves beyond my one hour or so with them. I have worked in Marana as a student teacher and have experience teaching beginning, middle school, high school musicians. I have also taught fourth graders to play Tin Whistle and third graders how to dance a jig, so I have experience with many age groups.

METHODS USED

For all my students I encourage great posture and hand position when playing flute because it is fundamental to tone production. My goal is to go beyond technique and tap into a well rounded sound that can blend with anyone. I use a touch of music theory in my lessons because I believe it helps students to understand how music functions and improves their sight reading skills. Part of my private lessons are geared towards helping students with music they are playing in their school program. However, it is my goal to give students the tools to learn music on their own such as sight reading skills, daily practice tools, and practice strategies so they are trained to hear if something is wrong and know how to fix it when I am not present. For beginning students I teach out of whatever book they are using in their school program and if none then I provide my own material, so there is no cost for parents unless the student wants to learn music outside of band, which they purchase on their own. My materials are developed from university level professors who have tried and true practice techniques to help any age group. For middle and high school students I also use etude books for sight reading practice and focus on technique to help with difficult rhythms and wide pitch ranges found in middle and high school music. For adults, I start with asking what their goals are and use supplemented materials depending where their focus is.

LESSON STYLE

It is important to always have a sense of motivation in anything we do, so my goal is to see what motivates students and use that to encourage great musicianship within all my students. I focus on giving students the tools to listen for good qualities in playing such as good tone production and accurate technique because they will go into their schools and programs being leaders. It is my hope to not only train great musicians but also great leaders to influence the sound of musicians around them. I love Irish music and think their tradition of learning music is valuable in creating good ears for music, so I may teach music by ear if an opportunity arrises that may help my students. Lastly, my relationship is not only one of teacher-student but of student-student. I believe it is every teachers job to learn from their students because in the end those students become adults who will be the next generation of teachers and other career professions.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
