I believe in the "one thing" lesson. If a student can improve on just one thing in a lesson than that lesson was successful. My past students would probably say I am overall a nice guy but incredibly picky when it comes to perfecting a piece and hold each of my students to a very high standard. Being a music education student, I learn about many methods of teaching that can cater to a variety of different people and musicians. I typically like to create practice sheets, so that progress can be tracked over time. Assessments will be based on effort, and minor improvements over a long period of time, as music takes a lot of patience and time to really improve! To start, I like to have students use the Beginner Rubank Method Book (the blue book) and work through this to get the basics down. After this, I like to choose some supplemental solo pieces that aren't in this book to help the students grasp the concepts that they have been working on, outside of what is shown in the book. I began teaching when I started studying with Berklee. Admittedly, I wasn't entirely sure how to take on such a job, but soon discovered that it was something that came naturally to me, and something I enjoyed doing. I have taught students of varying levels, from a complete beginner unable to read any music, to someone who was able to sightread proficiently.
