This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies. For example, I taught music history with a firm understanding of timeline, events and major human figures involved. However, I focused on making the student deeply familiar with the given time-periods by discussing in depth the human activities involving societal norms, cultural sensibilities and most certainly we analyzed the music; why it sounded the way it did and what were the cultural intentions, via expressivity of the performers and composers.
