I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician. I strive to set realistic goals and encourage my students to set realistic goals for themselves! This gives them an eagerness to learn because it is within their grasp. For example, If someone has a goal to be on american idol one day, I will have him/ her set a smaller goal to get there such as breath support or intonation. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with breathing and vocal exercise. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals and are introduced to the Belcanto technique, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate, for their first recital performance or audition. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guild my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging, fun, productive and fruitful, no matter their ability level. While I was in the Marine Corps I would give lessons to students from different high schools when going on recruiting tours. In addition, I like to incorporate my student's interests into their goals. For instance, for my guitar students, I like to set a realistic goal (a song they want to be able to play) and tailor my lessons towards my student being able to play that, while at the same time learning their fundamentals, or whatever else is in their lesson plan for that session.
