Instruments: Voice
I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician. I like to use the music that each student loves, which allows them to learn while still keeping things fun and interesting. Read More

Depending on my student's familiarity with their instrument, my approach to their lessons will differ accordingly. I thoroughly believe in teaching each student with a unique approach, one that caters both to their learning style and how comfortable they are playing in front of others. As a very shy child growing up, it was very difficult for me to play (and especially make mistakes) in front of my peers. I like to keep this in mind for my especially shy students. Read More

I teach in the bel canto style as I was taught, focusing on developing a greater capacity for breath control, relaxation of the tongue and jaw, good posture, and freedom of movement. However, I tailor every lesson to the student's needs and focus on addressing the vocal issues they face on a given day and in general. I develop a plan for the student each week, like learning a section of a piece or working on diction in a specific verse, but adapt this plan depending on how the student feels that day and what their input is. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments fuel students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone
I have a Masters and Bachelor degree, both in music education, and I have been playing saxophone for 16 years. I have substitute taught in Madison County, KY and recently completed my enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. I served as a music in Camp Pendleton, CA. I look forward to helping students perform in music and learning how to reach goals they want to obtain. Read More
Instruments: Piano
Many of them have since passed piano grade examinations and gained success in music competitions. While pursuing my doctoral degree, I was one of a handful of graduate teaching assistants at Penn State University that my duties included delivering individual piano lessons to music majors, and group piano lessons to non-majors. I have a wealth of experience teaching piano to a diverse group of students. By developing my students' listening, playing and thinking, I not only improved their piano technique, but also increased their understanding and appreciation of music. Read More

My method of teaching is very detailed instruction. There are many books that tend to start with the assumption that you know something about music or that music is easy to just "pick up." I like to start from the students' most basic skill level and fill in all the gaps as they progress. This means that starting out might be a bit slow, but the learning curve for future lessons is shortened and students eventually end up further ahead than if they skipped around. Read More
