For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. We begin to work on the voice that way, and then graduate to vocal exercises from the Vaccai exercise book and simple vocal pieces such as folk songs or one of the 24 Italian Arias. As students advance, or if they come to me at an advanced stage already, we move on to more difficult art songs or arias from operas, or branch out into the student's desired repertoire if they do not wish to study classical voice specifically. Singing is all about breathing techniques. No matter your age or vocal development, it is imperative that one learns how to breathe correctly. After teaching proper breathing techniques, I introduce many fundamentals of music, such as simple vocal warm ups and sight singing exercises. Of course, as we move into repertoire choices, I always try to find out what my students are interested in singing. I have sung a wide variety of singing styles in my day, so I feel confident in teaching whatever repertoire my students choose to sing. Read More

I received a Masters of Music in Voice from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and a Bachelors of Music from DePauw University. Classically trained and now singing as the female lead of a regional wedding band 2-5 nights a week. During my time at DePauw, I spent time in China singing with a chamber choir, a summer singing with an opera company in Novafeltria, Italy, and a semester studying at the conservatory in Milan, Italy.
