I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More

My approach is twofold: addressing the mind and addressing the body. I always have beginners learn how to stretch and release tension before they even sing, just like any athlete would. I have them develop a pre-singing routine including these stretches so they can both prepare themselves physically and mentally for every lesson and practice session. Then, I teach them basic warmups which help them build an awareness of their breath and where their body is in space. Read More

My teaching experience dates back even before my college days, as I began teaching at the West Lousiville Performance Academy over ten years ago, and have been teaching student since that time either in a choir or private lessons. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. There will be a mixture of digital online material, printed material and hands on learning. There are more online tools than ever. It is easy and cost effective to get started. Instruments can be purchased outright, rented and even paid for over interest free payment plans. I can provide those details to you when we speak. I will be finding out what the student wants to learn. I will be formulating a work flow to accomplish that. Read More
Instruments: Piano
Most of my students use Alfred's Piano Course. After just a few lessons, we add in additional books and songs to expose the student to as much music as possible. I believe that the more music a student is exposed to, the better a musician he or she becomes. With the exception of recital pieces, I rarely spend more than a few weeks on one song, but instead focus on guiding students to play a wide variety of music at their level. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone
For beginning students I believe a foundation in learning the notes on the instrument is important, as well as matching up those notes to the paper. A solid theory application is appropriate. For intermediate and advanced level students developing a style and interpretation of music is how to grow exponentially. I focus on building rapport with all students, but with advanced it is up to them to grow in musicianship. Read More

Singing is all about breathing techniques. No matter your age or vocal development, it is imperative that one learns how to breathe correctly. After teaching proper breathing techniques, I introduce many fundamentals of music, such as simple vocal warm ups and sight singing exercises. Of course, as we move into repertoire choices, I always try to find out what my students are interested in singing. I have sung a wide variety of singing styles in my day, so I feel confident in teaching whatever repertoire my students choose to sing. Read More
