Regardless of their ages, I always attempt to establish what a student's interests in music are as well as their background and present faculties if applicable. From there, I attempt to develop an understanding of musical fundamentals (pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics) as they apply to their interests. It is crucial in my opinion to connect these essential elements of music to the context of a student's musical world. During my study in Shanghai, I started teaching middle school wind ensembles as well as saxophone and clarinet lessons. Starting 2012, I also have been teaching jazz combos and saxophone ensembles for Shanghai International Saxophone and Jazz Summer Camp. I designed my course on the topic of jazz history while I was in Boston. Firstly, I think building a good rapport with my students is important in establishing a comfort level that is conducive to learning. I've found that students(especially children) are more engaged, ask more questions, and have more fun in the lesson if the teacher makes an effort to connect with his or her student. I will begin with what the student is interested in, work with songs or genres that they like and go from there. I will always make it fun and engaging no matter their ability level. I will teach with some of the Agostini's books for every level, and some books that I used in school. We will learn, develop rudiments, grooves, concepts ideas, independance together and make it fun. If the student does not express a total passion for wanting to learn the instrument, then I suggest that maybe this is not for them. The most important thing is that when they do have the time to practice, it is focused and in intervals that are divided up, so as not to loose concentration on what they are learning.
