My teaching style is to go at the student's pace but also to gently encourage and motivate all along the way. In this way, the students has the incentive to work at their own pace while I try to move the momentum along. The whole idea is to have fun while learning and to motivate each other by learning and playing music together. My additional teaching style is to also listen to music together and assign trumpeters to listen to. in this way the student is able to hear what other trumpet players sound like and can hopefully acquire the sound they like and want in their ear to emulate it in their own sound. Teaching, for me, began when I was in high school; I taught summer drumset lessons at McQuaid Jesuit and taught Karate at Martial Arts America. This desire to teach was incorporated with my love of music...leading me to pursue a degree in Music Education. I began performing and competing in fourth grade, which continued into my college years. In my third year of undergraduate work, these elements of music led me as well as three of my percussion buddies to performances and clinics (that we taught) at the New York State School Music Association and the New York State Band Director's Association conventions. I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time.
