It is extremely important to me that every student benefits from his or her own personally tailored lesson. This means that there is no "cut and paste" lesson plan to use with each student. Once I get to know the student, I will be able to judge their level of playing ability, their ability to read music, how good their posture is, how good their hand position is, etc. It is also important to me to get to know the student's personality, so that when teaching, I can help make the student feel as comfortable as possible during the lesson. I like teaching and performing music. There is nothing better than when I learn to play the piece well. Also-when I teach the beginning student-it is great to see how that student develops his/her playing over the days/weeks/months. It is good to have constant attention of the teacher because of learning to play the pieces in correct way is very important. After getting a clear idea, I begin to look over the basic fundamentals of the guitar with the student. We either do this through beginner exercises I know from books that I have used throughout the years to learn and teach or just basic general exercises that I may have in mind. Examples of these books include: Troy Stetina Series, Hal Leonard Guitar Method, etc... After that, we would slowly move our way through more fundamentals and even check out some basic music theory (notes on the fretboard, basic chords and finger positioning, beginner scales, etc...) I believe goals are very important in order to progress. However, each student progresses at their own pace. I like setting small goals weekly, and often times incorporate techniques into songs. Seeing students achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. I'll ask students to bring pencil and paper to each lesson and will designate technical goals, fretboard knowledge, and whatever the student's goal is (learning a song, another scale, solo part, etc). I love sharing my knowledge with my students. There is nothing better than to watch them evolve and grow. There is such joy in watching a student learn and master a particular exercise assigned to him or her. I enjoy teaching at every level, from beginners to advanced.
