The student, even at a young age, learns an introduction to music theory. Each concept is taught in a very methodical and step-by-step approach. I always start with a warm up, followed by scale studies. From there we move to etudes, and solos or concerti, and end with excerpts from books like the Mueller technical study or Arban book. For more advanced students and jazz players, I like to start with a warm up, scale study, learn tunes and the blues, big band charts, and end with listening and transcriptions. I use several levels of method books that may encompass technical concepts (Moyse), orchestral studies (J. Donjon), Selected Duets, Solo works, Aebersold Jazz Studies and custom lesson plans that I create according to the performance level of the student. It is important to be creative in implementing the different levels of cognition to help students effectively retain and use new information. With regards to technical development I encourage all students to practice slowly for accuracy and muscle memory. Read More

For beginning students I do follow the Suzuki Method to an extent, where they learn the main parts of the instrument and bow, how to hold it to prevent as much tension as possible, and some general ear training exercises to help with learning pieces. I have a list of games to do that especially work well with younger beginners, since their attention span is limited and I want to make the lesson time productive but also fun for them. Read More

Each student is different and as such, each student's approach to learning music is different. While still addressing your personal goals, I work to help you achieve those goals and interests, but also utilize my own experiences in teaching to foster deeper growth. I focus on exploration, keeping the study interesting, all while understanding that each student can be at any level, and learn at any speed. I believe that both talent and potential must be met with effort for growth to be achieved, and that all students need some form of discipline and encouragement and make sure to serve both at every lesson.
