That means scales and etudes that assist in getting the student familiar with their instrument and proficient on an elementary level. I have always had a passion to help others and to teach. I started to volunteer at an elementary school and help teach vocals for their musical theatre performance they were working on. It was a great experience to teach a group setting and see what each person needed and what would work for them to help them learn. Simultaneously, Jamie single-handedly designed, produced, and taught the General Music Program for K-10 at Cornerstone Academy in Brockport, NY. In the last twelve years, Jamie has built a formidable studio of private students of all ages on guitars, saxophones, piano/keyboard, bass, voice, composition/songwriting, and music theory. Congruently, he has produced and hosted annual student recitals, given pre-conservatory consulting, helping to place students at Belmont, Berklee, SUNY Purchase, MIT, etc., led three pre-school music programs, and served as Jewish Music Specialist and Shabbat Program Coordinator for the 92Y camps summers 2012, 2013, and 2014, and for the UWS JCC Camps summers 2015 and 2016. I have been teaching for 7 years and under those years I have taught first timers and more advanced players and helped players get better at drums. I first started teaching friends kids and it grew from there and more people asked for lessons and I made more time for it and really feel in love with teaching. I like to first get a feel for the students abilities and asses how to teach them by breaking things down to their bare essentials before suggesting a good book to go through and the right exercises. I find that most young students or beginners need to see some form of result to stay engaged so I try and get them moving with sticks on a pad or even learning a basic drum beat within the first two lessons. With my youngest students I like to start note reading early to build a strong foundation. I often use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1, or the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Vol.1 2. Depending on the student's playing style, we may use other books or handouts as well. I also teach with guitar tab or tablature, which can be an easier way to start learning songs and riffs.
