I find it is incredibly important to spend the time early on making sure your technique and form is sound and strong. This will start you off with a solid foundation that will help you play what ever musical styles you wish. I like to start students off with simple scales and melodies that will build up your dexterity, muscle memory and general ability to play the instrument. Once you can work your way around the instrument you can start learning more lessons about reading music, ear training and improvisation. Read More

My methods of Teaching are simple; Teach according to the knowledge, experience, and ability of the student. Anything can be accomplished! The way I teach is a simple A, B, C method, by spelling out the best learning styles for an unsocial student, and a group of students. Lessons vary from beginner lessons of simple reading, to expert lessons of how to apply fills, patterns, chops, and time signature differences. Read More

For me, the best part of teaching is helping students grow, and helping them realize their musical abilities and self-reliance. I feel that my role as a teacher is to present new information or challenges, and aid the student in learning how to address those challenges on their own. I find that this encourages the students to want to learn more and more to expand their own musical and technical literacy, and it makes them much more prepared for individual practice, ensemble playing, and future challenges where they have to rely on themselves. I grew up in Santa Cruz, California, and began playing piano at age 9 with the help of my older sister who also played piano. During my high school years, I focused on composition, which became my main area of study during college. Through my college training at the University of California in Santa Cruz and San Jose State University I supported myself by giving piano lessons, playing organ and piano for churches, and working as a freelance pianist. To me, the most rewarding thing to see is seeing your students develop the same passion you did when you were their age! As an educator, I believe that no two students are exactly alike -- each student has their own strengths and learn at different paces. It's important to use those strengths and foster them to achieve the best possible goal. By finding out what interests the student, I can cater to their individual needs, wants, and creativity. I want to know exactly what your goals are and help you achieve them. Not sure what your goals are? Thats fine too! I am here to take your playing to the next level in as many ways as possible. My philosophy is that your ear is your most important tool as a musician. With this in mind I will emphasize ear training and functional harmony. Music theory can be a complicated beast, but if we practice theory and listening side by side, our understanding becomes much more meaningful. Read More

For all of my students, I let them pick a song (vocal) or piece (violin) that they would like to sing or play. This way I can analyze what level they are on. For my voice students, I start with vocal warm-up exercises of the different vowels. It helps me to understand their range as well as tone of voice. For my violin students, I usually stick with the Suzuki Method, or Essential Elements books, if they are in the more beginning stages. Read More
