Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. Each student is unique and special to me. When they enter my studio, I want them to enjoy every moment of the lesson. The student's individual personality guides me in the way I conduct each teaching session. Whether they want to play an Elton John song, a Chopin Nocturne in Eb, a Miles Davis jazz piece, or the Moonlight Sonata, I will guide them along the way. My junior year culminated with a semester in New York City working in an administrative/artistic internship at the Metropolitan Opera. During school, and immediately upon graduating, I was fortunate enough to see my interest in music and theatre education realized in my work opportunities. For the past few summers, I worked at four community arts organizations, as both a teacher and an administrator. With the addition to encouraging individual practice skills, I find it key to ask parents to partake in their child's practice skills, as well. I work each week to plan out how best to convey the information needed, but if things need to change in the lesson, I adapt to provide what is needed for the student to still grow.
