Because of this I give students a lot of room to play around and just enjoy holding the guitar and making any appreciable sound with it. Especially with very young children, I find this is key to keeping them engaged and curious about the instrument at first. I have been teaching music for over 15 years as a private teacher and also a class violin instructor and orchestra director.  I have also served for many years as an adjudicator for Massachussetts All State Orchestras. For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers To Play."  Once the student has progressed and becomes more familiar with reading the notes in both clefs, I will begin to introduce solo pieces of music that the child picks out of the choices I present to them.  I do this to help encourage and reward the child with their success.  For adult piano students, I find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly.
