For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods, including Hal Leonard's Children's Guitar Method, Suzuki methodologies (I am NOT a Suzuki-certified teacher), and materials I've developed over my 25 year teaching career. I emphasize basic technique for the left and right hands, and I make sure they learn the basics of reading music. For older students (middle school-age to adult), I tend to let the student lead. I have taught mostly for friends in the past. I started playing in early age, but didn't start teaching until some high school friends wanted to learn a few things. I really enjoyed helping them break down a problem, I always had a very systems-approach. Recently, I had a female student that was learning pieces for her school's talent show. Depending on experience level I like to get people making music as soon as possible. I know that trudging through the basics can be tiring. Of course some basics are neccesary but I like to make the basics sound as musical as possible. We will cover the fundamentals but we'll do so in such a way that it won't feel like so much work. I like to use books, depending on skill level, for reference but I have a very hands on approach and feel that the best work to be done together is the stuff that can't be found in the book.
