For older and/or more advanced students, I like to create a balance of tone warm ups, scale work, etudes, and musical rep. I encourage students to bring pieces they are interested in learning into their lessons. If a student is also interested in non-classical music (e.g. Disney tunes, Celtic music, pop, jazz, etc.), I find music in those genres at their playing level for them to enjoy. Sharing my knowledge with my students and seeing them achieve something they worked hard for, and being part of the process is one of the biggest joys in teaching for me. I always aim to help my students produce a beautiful tone, while making sure they are not doing wrong physical movements that would make things difficult.
