I always start with what the student is interested in. I find that learning music comes much more naturally when the student is inspired and entertained by what they are trying to learn. I come from a long tradition of learning music by ear. I believe this is the best way to develop true musicality. While I very much see the value in sheet music, I believe that reading music without being about to play it by ear is like being about to write and write but not speak and understand English. Hello, and thanks for reading about me! I recently graduated from New England Conservatory with a BM in Jazz Studies. Next Fall I will be pursuing a Master's degree from the Conservatory on a full merit based scholarship. I play lead, jazz, classical, and all sorts of pop music. You may find me around Boston playing in musicals, rock clubs, jazz big bands, a small restaurant with a trio, or even subbing in a local orchestra. Read More
Instruments: Drums
It's a well known fact that few things are as fun as playing the drums. My goal is to make the learning process as fun as actually playing. I encourage students to learn by demonstrating how even the most basic concepts function in the most complex settings. I find students have the most fun when they present me with something specific they wish to learn. By training students how to set goals, they stay inspired and motivated, which inspires and motivates me to challenge them! Read More
Instruments: Cello
All students are encouraged to find level-appropriate pieces (that don't have to be classical!) they wish to play, and I will do my best to help them achieve their request and can provide suggestions as well. I try to incorporate songs and tunes outside of the classical genre into my assignments to keep students' practice sessions fun, and for students interested in learning non-classical cello, we can work together to create a curriculum that fits your needs. Instruments: Cello
I've been teaching the cello and music to individuals and ensembles for ten years. During my undergraduate degree, I taught with the Virginia Tech String Project. From conducting, coaching sectionals, and helping students with technique during rehearsals, I gained many of the teaching methods and practices I keep today. I also co-taught string ensembles at the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. In these camps, teachers and students together had a week to program, practice, and perform a concert. Every student is different and has their own taste in music. I hope to help every student find the same joy in playing music as they do in their listening. This requires two important aspects: development of technique/facility on one's instrument, and a sense of acheiving one's personal musical goals. I try to give every student basic exercises to work on to develop facility on their given instrument, but I tailor those exercises towards music that the student has expressed interest in learning. Instruments: Piano
In order to support students in discovering and sharing their unique artistic voices, I strive to provide a space in lessons where students feel safe to explore, discover, experiment, and make mistakes. The goal for all my students is to be able to perform with full conviction and belief in their interpretations through score study and analysis, technical mastery, and emotional engagement. Beyond learning about music and the technical aspects of playing the piano, the ultimate goal for my students is to learn more about themselves, about life, and to have the pure joy of experiencing life through music.
