I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. It came so naturally, I started playing funk, and they immediately bought me a drum set. I mainly teach the Suzuki method, especially for beginner/intermediate players. After Book 5, I tend to use conservatory repertoire such as technique books ( Sevcik, Hrimaly), Scale Books, Etudes, and concertos. When it comes to keeping my students interested, I try to find songs that my students are interested in learning. My teaching style is heavily based on empathy and drive. To be where I'm at right now in my musicianship, I was once in the position of not knowing what to do or how to get better, and I know how intimidating or nerve-wracking it can be to perform for another person. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace.
