With beginner students I start by establishing good foundation through method books by Simandl and Todor Toshev which include technical exercises for both hands as well as little popular melodies to keep the student interested and develop their musicianship. With more advanced bassists I introduce exercises, etudes and methods by Franois Rabbath, Bottesini, Hrabe and others as well are pieces form the standard double bass repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary composition. We begin by learning some key fundamental rolls and then use to play some easy songs. Then we move to the more complex Slides, Pull-offs and hammer-ons and how to blend into the rolls.
