One of the cool things about teaching is that every student is different and learns differently! I am usually able to assess each students level and pace within the first couple lessons. At the end of each lesson I will give them a realistic goal to achieve for the next lesson. Any improvement is improvement and I try and always recognize that. I try to inspire by example as well, showing the student where their practicing and hard work can take them if they keep working at it diligently. Read More

Seeing that "Eureka" moment in a student's eyes is one of the best experiences in the world. It is my goal to have that moment with all my students and have them consistently improving each lesson. I will do this by setting realistic goals and giving them positive encouragement along the way. If they are struggling, I will work with them every step of the way to ensure they learn correctly and have a good foundation for future learning. Read More

If a student has never been introduced to music, I try to take them on a creative journey. I often want to find out what is their favorite kind of music. It is all about making the student comfortable and eager. It's important to always commend the student when there's progression. I always encourage my students to learn about many different types of music; to broaden their musical ear and notice how many type of music can come together and create something epic. Read More

For all students, I eschew learning specific beats of specific songs, and instead teach them to hear/play/read/write beats from generic forms to specific variations. For this, Ive adapted my system of Seven Shapes for rhythmic permutation. For beginner students, we focus on hearing pulse, counting meter, and simple rudiments for basic stick control. Beginners learn basic rock beats, first one limb/voice at a time, then combing all parts into the complete drum set rhythm.. Read More

Each lesson begins with a chat while we gently stretch, breathe and prepare your body to sing. Singers are attached to their instrument and so getting your mind focused and getting comfortable in the singing space allows us to have as productive a lesson as we can. We work on vocalizes and technique next- to properly warm you up and strengthen your instrument. All of the vocalizing we do is then put to work in your repertoire, chosen by me and also including your preferences and anything you bring that you are currently working on. Read More

There is nothing quite like it. My own enthusiasm helps the student to "catch fire" and to also feel enthusiastic about the music and their progress. At the end of every lesson I give the student very clear goals to accomplish by the next lesson. For example, to play the music faster, to make corrections in notes or fingerings, to make more use of dynamics, and, on a more advanced level, to play the music more convincingly and on a level that the composer would have wanted. I'm new to teaching on this level, but I do have some prior experience, most notably a paid tenure teaching a family friend for a summer. My student was very young and a novice, so I primarily utilized both formal methods for the understanding of fundamentals of music theory and technique, though I also helped her learn to play a few popular songs at her request. Letting students pursue their own personal interests in music in addition to teaching them the fundamentals is important to me, but with more experienced students I generally tend to focus more on improvisation and harmony as opposed to sightreading.
