In my 30 years as a drummer/musician, whether authoring, performing, or recording music, Ive consistently pushed myself to explore new styles, techniques, and approach. My first grade-shool hands were with my then-step-brother, moving from simple punk to more melodic surf-frock to lush psychedelic rock. Across increasingly noisy and experimental bands, I quickly learned to serve powerful, solid time. I understand that singing is a very exposing form of music-making and one of the barriers holding us back from our full potential as singers is confidence in our ability to sing. My style is encouraging, easy-going, patient and understanding.  I explain things as many times as necessary in a calm friendly manner since I know students (and all the rest of us) don't remember stuff the first time it is heard—or played—or read. I encourage questions and discussions about practicing, repertoire, performing, and careers. To be sure time is well spent, I'll sometimes say, "Practice this piece just as you would if I were not here."  This way I can offer suggestions for learning pieces and methods more quickly.   Practice time should be a joyful time, full of a sense of accomplishment, and I am especially keen to help make this so for all students. More than anything else, I try to grow a love for the cello and music, because without a passion, lessons can be a drag (trust me, I know!). I try to incorporate some of the student's other interests into the lessons, ie. pop music, art, even science! I also place a lot of value on progressing at the student's own pace and understanding when a student doesn't really like a particular piece, not to spend too much time on it. Read More

For me, witnessing the "ah-hah" moment in a student's face is priceless. It means that a certain concept or idea has been understood by the student. I use the first lesson to find out what the student is inspired by and what aspect of their playing they wish to improve on depending on their age and skill level. Once I find out what inspires them, I'll be better informed as how to keep them inspired and moving towards certain goals. Read More
