Master Degree: Western Michigan University, Bachelor Degree: Washburn University
I'm an energetic and passionate instructor who loves sharing my love for flute! I hold two degrees in flute performance. A Bachelor of Music obtained from Washburn University (Topeka, KS) and a Master of Music from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI). I have had the honor of studying and learning from some of the best flute players across the country, and love that I can take the knowledge from those amazing players and pass them on to my students. I have been teaching since 2014 and haven't stopped since!
I started a flute studio in 2014 and haven't stopped teaching since! Throughout the years I have taught in person, online, have led flute choirs, and have been a clinician for woodwind sections for bands and orchestras. I have produced students who consistently achieve superior ratings at solo festivals and have received principal chair positions within their school band. I create a fun environment for my students to learn and grow while also maintaining the balance of this being a disciplined study.
I have a few different options for method books, and I base what method to use depending on what you have learned before starting lessons with me and your age. I have acquired a variety of method books from my own studies, from my sister (who also played flute), and from teaching over the years. I don't like to follow one 'correct' way of teaching the flute, because there isn't one! Everyone learns differently, so it's important to have a variety of methods to choose from. I usually pick and choose from a few different methods at a time.
I teach in a very energetic and encouraging way. I don't want you coming into a lesson dreading the fact that you have to play music, I want you coming in excited to show off what you've learned! To help you feel like you aren't getting 'stuck' in lessons, I like to create goals and then create a timeline on how and when you'll achieve those goals. I am also a big believer that if you (the student) choose what you are working on, then you'll actually want to work on it! It is extremely important to me that, even though I am the teacher, I am not dictating every move of your musical journey. This journey is yours, so you should have a say in it!
