Based on a child's interest and personal voice, I recommend pieces of music varying from musical theatre, 28 Italian Songs, Schirmer's Book of Solos, and Hal Leonard's Standard Literature. In our lessons, I teach students to warm up with the proper technique, and so that they may warm themselves up when practicing. For beginners, I usually introduce them the 12 main notes of music, the physical parts of the guitar, basic chords, and why these chords are named in such a specific way. As students progress, I will introduce more chords and plucking/strumming techniques. I also allow students to choose whatever songs they wish to learn. In the past, I have taught a couple of students who were beginners. One student was not American, and I had to teach her proper English pronunciation, while teaching her vocal technique. She was a hard worker, and came prepared the next week. Therefore, I could work at a faster level with her, then could I with another student who was progressing more slowly. If I can make a difference by teaching, in vocal technique, but also in the love of music, having fun, and finding and tapping into the creative part of my students, then I did my job.  Read More

I am new to Florida (which I love, by the way!) but spent many years teaching singers in middle and high school as well as adults with the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice (opera) in NYS. My greatest performance memories include singing in the backup chorus for tenor Andrea Bocelli (for 20,000 screaming fans!), as well as Barry Manilow, Scotty McCreery, Josh Groban, Aretha Franklin, Reba and the legendary Yolanda Adams for "A Capitol Fourth" live on PBS for their 4th of July celebrations in Washington, DC. Immediately I'd like to know why the student is pursuing the given instrument, then sort of gauge a level of passion, drive, talent, etc. and then work from there. With guitar and piano there are several routes one could choose for performance, and each one has different teaching fundamentals. Someone who gravitates more toward Jazz will need a very strong base in musical theory, where as someone who wants to play classical might need stronger technical work. Read More
