The most important part of my music classes is that my students are having fun as they're learning. I want them to feel safe and comfortable, especially in making mistakes. My teaching style depends on the student's age and ability. Student's at different levels and ages will need various approaches. For everyone, I try to be calming, supportive, and as fun as possible; there are differences for various ages. With very young students, it's important to be as supportive as possible; especially when learning new things that can often be frustrating. One of the greatest benefits that my students get from me is my ability to teach. I wrap the learning around each student's personality. This has a lot to do with my master's research around cognitive learning . I teach students based on their desires. I emphasize both notes and rhythms in my teaching, and for both notes and rhythms, I strongly believe in the importance of being able to not only read them, but hear and feel them as well. These aural skills are an immense part of accelerating a student's development, helping them learn and memorize music quickly, familiarizing them with music theory, and creating a close personal relationship between themselves and their musical studies. I like to be flexible and change up my method depending on each student's needs and goals. Most of the time, I start beginners off with a book such as A Tune A Day, Suzuki Violin School, String Builder, or the Hal Leonard. I also provide other handouts with exercises and additional material. After some time, I like to introduce new etudes and pieces that suit their current level but also provide challenges to help them grow. Read More

For beginning students I start with Suzuki books until about book 5 and then begin to branch out into other repertoire.  I teach students to read music as well as basic theory.
