Hello! My name is Cecilia S.. I am a soon-to-be music therapist who has a love for creating individualized music experiences for my students. This year, I will be completing my Bachelor's degree in music therapy and will take my board exam to become a board-certified music therapist! In the meantime, I am enjoying doing music therapy in my internship and teaching music lessons. I have taught students of all ages, but I have a particular interest in early childhood music and adaptive lessons. Read More

Instruments: Violin

I find joy in helping students achieve their goals. I always aim for high quality, but also make the process fun. If the goal is to sound professional, I make sure we spend a good amount of time working on scales, etudes, and learning the essential classical music like the Bach six Sonatas and Partitas. I like the Galamian violin playing methods, and find them very effective to teach. I do this with almost all levels of students, as it solidifies the technical skills of a performer, allowing them to express themselves musically. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. I try my best to lead all lessons with kindness and respect. If those foundations are there, I feel that is the best way to build trust with a student and motivate them to improve. I am very goal driven with my lessons, and want students to always be actively working towards both short term and long term goals while they practice. I also want to enforce the importance of repetition and consistency, as that is crucial for improvement on the instrument. Read More

For beginners, I put a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of music, such as getting to know the staff, time signatures, how to construct a major scale, etc. I will also introduce the student to intervals, which are the basic building blocks of western music. The student will also begin basic ear training, by learning to recognize certain intervals by ear, and also learning to sing and play on their instrument when given a reference pitch. Read More

Instruments: Cello

I center the way I teach technique around what "feels" good to a student, especially older students who have already started, to make sure that we are able to prevent and respond to injuries. So, I start with stretching and will frequently refer back to exercises that are meant to integrate physical ease into playing. Aside from that, I try to balance a consistent routine/expectation of things I want to cover (asking for things a week in advance, always playing a scale at the start of the lesson, etc), while also meeting a student where they are at on the day. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
