I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. Music for me has been the one constant in my long trip called life. Since the age of 10 I have played trumpet, then baritone horn. I took my brother's flute and began learning flute solos off of the radio. Shortly after starting flute, I met a small group of players (music theory class in high school) who helped to "transform" my scope of music to heights I never would have dreamed before (I still play with some of them). My experience is derived from my work as an instructor at an Ann Arbor music school. I have taught a wide range of ages, and enjoy every age I teach for different reasons. I believe everyone has something new to offer. I have played in punk, rock, and ska bands, as well as playing with certain groups at the music school. I have planned and orchestrated a summer camp and run rehearsals on a weekly basis, with groups of young kids, so I can definitely handle kids of any age. Read More
