I began teaching career my senior year of college, since then I have taught privately and collectively for the past 15 years. I have taught classical, broadway, gospel, Latin, Indian, and African forums of music in variety of ways. My methods are adaptable based on the student's previous or current instruction with private teachers or their school teachers. For all students I love to play along and model concepts for them. I involve a lot of kinesthetic movement based lessons along with visual and aural aids. I get to know the type of learner my student is and then plan my instruction to fit their learning style. I am a teacher that advocates the necessity to understand music as well as instrument proficiency. Whatever instrument is chosen to learn, I do use curriculum series to accomplish before we move to student's choice of music. I feel that I would do a disservice to students if I also taught related to the instrument only. That being said, maintaining motivation and excitement is also very important to me! For beginning to intermediate students, I use the Suzuki Method. Each successive piece introduces a new skill, so that the student is always building on learned skills. Dr. Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki Violin Method, spoke often of the “Suzuki Triangle.” This is an equilateral triangle with Parent, Teacher, and Student in each of the corners. The triangle helps illustrate that each role is equally important. In Michigan, I acquired a Bachelor of Music degree at Michigan State University under the tutelage of Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. I then moved to Florida to acquire a Master of Music degree at Florida State University under the tutelage of David Detweiler and Leon Anderson.
