I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students of all ages. I graduated with a degree from the University of Toledo with a Bachelors of Education (Instrumental Music education). I am licensed to teach grades pk-12 in the public schools, but also have experience with working with adult students in my own private studio. I've had the opportunity to teach elementary music to a primary school of 500, and am currently focusing on expanding my private online studio. As far as performance, I've taken my music to local farmers markets and all the way to Florida and Alabama! My first instrument was flute, and at the University of Toledo I studied classically under the training of Joel Tse, the first flute in the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. In addition to my studies with the classical flute, I additionally took three years of college-level piano, and a intensive class in Secondary Vocal methods.
My teaching experience dates back to 2013, where I first began tutoring local junior high students for the summer band program. I have been teaching private lessons and studying how to be a better educator ever since. My private home studio has been running for over 3 years now. In private lessons I incorporate a complex combination of music theory, ear training, popular music, and classical! At the end of every lesson I take detailed notes on the students progress, and always check in to make sure we are playing something they want to learn! My students are always encouraged to enter in competitions and recitals, and I also encourage compositions and other creativity, such as home recording and electronic music production.
For beginning students, I typically start with a Sound Before Symbol Method. That is, we learn to get to know the instrument before adding sheet music and theory. Every student's learning track is individualized- So if you want to learn pop music, I will arrange that for the flute! If classical is what you are interested in, I will bring in the Bach Partitas. Music theory and instrumental music can be taught using any genre, so let's make it what you want to play! I make sure my guiding instruction keeps lessons engaging and fun, no matter the age or level.
My teaching style is classically informed due to my college studies. However, nothing is more rewarding than seeing my students develop a passion for their own type of music! In my music studio, we set realistic goals and progress at a pace of your choice. As long as there is clear communication between me and my student, we can tailor and adjust the instruction type and style to the students wants and needs.
