For all beginning students, I usually will take a lesson or two to assess where the student is at regarding music, depending on (if any) previous experience with music, e.g. piano lessons, etc. For trumpet students, I am not beholden to any one instructional method book. I have been teaching private music lesson for 5 years and have several loyal and dedicated students. My students participate in two performances each year, which I arrange. Our last recital was focused on the student's performing their own compositions that we wrote together in our lessons. Students should be able to play the music they enjoy, but are also encouraged to expland their horizons to new and different genres. During a typical lesson I will hear the pieces my student was practicing the week before, make corrections or suggestions and have them play the piece again. Then I will assign them new pieces and have them play through them making sure they understand what to do and explaining any new concepts and giving suggestions on how to practice. I started teaching music when I was a junior in high school. I continued teaching private lessons through my college career to local grade school and high school students. College was where I learned how to teach and play strings, woodwinds, percussion, voice, and piano in addition to brass. Once I graduated with my Bachelor's degree, I taught as the adjunct professor of low brass at Saint Joseph's College teaching tuba, trombone, euphonium, and capstone performance courses to the college's music majors. I graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College and earned an associates Degree in Jazz Music. I went on to U.W. Milwaukee and studied classical music and was part of the U.W. Milwaukee Percussion Ensemble for 4 years. After graduating from U.W. Milwaukee I became a full time musician and traveled as a full time musician working throughout the United States and internationally.
