For young, beginning students, I usually work from the Hal Leanard's Essential Elements mixed with separate, individualized exercises, usually intended for regular practice warm-ups. For students that have grasped the fundamentals, we will explore solo repertoire and etudes that are not only appropriate for their skill level but also interesting and fun to play. I started teaching music as soon as I got involved with playing and performing with other musicians. I payed great detail to how others taught me as I found it to be useful to not only learn how to play music, but to teach myself to play music through observing how others taught me. In doing so I was able to determine what worked best for me and what didn't, but I also came to the realization that others have particular strengths and weaknesses when It comes to learning as I will explain in My Methods. For beginning students that are k-12 I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to align with the public school music curriculum. For those 18+ or hoping to learn an instrument outside of school purposes I highly encourage students to pick out their own repertoire to learn however I'm more than happy to help with the process of choosing music. For those with a base line understanding of music we will still read from various methods books and play some standard repertoire but it will not be the focus of lessons. Read More
