For beginning students that are k-12 I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to align with the public school music curriculum. For those 18+ or hoping to learn an instrument outside of school purposes I highly encourage students to pick out their own repertoire to learn however I'm more than happy to help with the process of choosing music. For those with a base line understanding of music we will still read from various methods books and play some standard repertoire but it will not be the focus of lessons. Read More

Everyone learns differently, so I make sure to customize practice routines and adjust how much info I throw at you depending on your style and focus. I started teaching privately close to 20 years ago and it has led me to teach in a variety of settings. I have taught in both public and private school and individual and group lessons. I encourage students to develop a consistent practice schedule and also create very individualized curriculum for students and their musical goals. I started teaching music as soon as I got involved with playing and performing with other musicians. I payed great detail to how others taught me as I found it to be useful to not only learn how to play music, but to teach myself to play music through observing how others taught me. In doing so I was able to determine what worked best for me and what didn't, but I also came to the realization that others have particular strengths and weaknesses when It comes to learning as I will explain in My Methods.
