I like to teach with the music from the Suzuki books and then the Bach Sonatas and Partitas, out of an interest in teaching with actual music as opposed to scales or etudes, but I also introduce repertoire from outside those books, and isolate sections of standard violin repertoire for learning. This has the advantage of always keeping music in our ears as we play (by this I mean, we do not lose the sound of music in the sound of the violin as I feel can happen in overtly technical exercise), which is essential to growing an authentic relationship to one's sound and, by extension, to learning new ways to improving one's sound. My goal is teach you to be able communicate (improvise, listen and respond) through a 3-step process, which includes; 1. Imitation: Listening and Learning lines by ear, Transcribing solos. Absorbing a player’s feel, articulation, and time. 2. Assimilation, which means ingraining these stylistic nuances, harmonic devices, and lines that you’ve transcribed into your musical conception. Not just mentally understanding them on the surface level, but truly connecting them to your ear and body. Read More

Instruments: Voice
My teaching is rooted in the philosophy of functional singing, which means everything I teach has a purpose rooted in the physiology of singing. We do a lot of different exercises and say a lot of funny sounding words, but each exercise is carefully crafted to maximize training your voice's flexibility, agility, or strength. Similar to how you might do a bicep curl to make your bicep stronger, vocal exercises are part of a broader "vocal workout" regimen based on what your voice needs on any given day. Read More

I have taught drums for over twenty years. Though I had to take a 2 year hiatus from 2014-2016, I have maintained a performance and practice routine for myself and kept in touch with those students I had at the time who continue to call me today and ask questions. Now that I am back to teach some of them are even coming back. I have taught out of stores as well as my home studio. Read More

Music is much more than notes on a page or a skill to be obtained- it is an universal means of expression and has the potential to touch people in different ways, performer and audience alike. Because of this perspective, I enjoy studying and teaching a variety of genres, eras, languages, and characters. I believe that some of the best teachers of performing arts are those that can use their performance knowledge as a basis for guiding their students while also acting as a sounding board for their students to use in respect to their own musical decisions.
