METHODS USED
For younger students, I tend to make learning the guitar more enjoyable and fun. Since younger kids need motivation, I prefer to let them play with accompaniment in order to make the lesson and their playing more enjoyable. For more advanced students, I believe that introducing them to variety of music styles is essential to build their musical personality and let them decide what style they want to learn. Finally, I encourage my students to perform in public, so they can build their confidence and realize the great outcome of their hard work.
LESSON STYLE
As a guitar instructor for more than twelve years, the main goal of my teaching strategy is to keep my students motivated and engaged. This strategy can keep the students’ passion all along their academic journey. It also helps them to stay focused on their future goals despite some difficulties and obstacles that can face them through the learning process. Moreover, keeping effective communication with the students outside and inside the school is vital, in order to assist them in their studies and make the school environment more friendly and acceptable. When it comes to music performance, self-confidence is an essential element to be a successful performer. Thus, I tend to focus on building my students’ confidence through performing activities, this makes performance a normal and familiar task for them. By doing this, the students will be more comfortable on stage and they will focus on improving the quality of their performance combined with building their own artistic personality rather than overthinking the stage experience. I keep refining and reviewing my curriculum in order to improve it, this can be done by keeping positive and productive communication with faculty members. Also, getting feedbacks from the students and listening to their suggestions can make the outcomes more effective. I believe that keeping myself up to date with new musical and teaching technology with the right application of it will improve the outcomes of learning process and it keeps the teacher closer to the younger generation of students since younger generation is always more involved and open to new technology. Regarding musical repertoire, I emphasize a diverse and enjoyable repertoire especially for guitar ensemble and group classes. I tend to introduce my students to different cultures and wider musical experience by playing and practicing works composed by composers from around the world and even arranging traditional music of variety of cultures. For me, teaching in groups was always an enjoyable experience. In my view, making a friendly environment is the corner stone for having successful results. Understanding the individual differences between the group members will make the experience more enjoyable for all members. For example, a musical piece that matches the average level of the group members can be efficient in letting the lower levels to improve their skills. On the other hand, the higher level will learn how to take the responsibility of leading the other level. Finally, based on my experience I believe that teaching does not only mean that the students will learn from their teachers. I am inclined to believe that teaching is a mutual process where I learn from teaching, and I learn from my students by listening to their questions and perspectives with immeasurable admiration of their unlimited imagination and creativity.
