Instruments: Violin
My teaching style reflects the fundamental idea that learning to play the violin is not a linear process. The bow hold is learned through a good bow stroke, and the bow stroke is learned through a good bow hold. Every element of playing the violin can be cast in a reciprocal relationship like this, and in reality it is even more complicated, as it is not simply two parts leaning off one another but all parts. My goal is teach you to be able communicate (improvise, listen and respond) through a 3-step process, which includes; 1. Imitation: Listening and Learning lines by ear, Transcribing solos. Absorbing a player’s feel, articulation, and time. 2. Assimilation, which means ingraining these stylistic nuances, harmonic devices, and lines that you’ve transcribed into your musical conception. Not just mentally understanding them on the surface level, but truly connecting them to your ear and body. Read More

I've been singing, playing drums, and piano for the past twelve years. I've received formal training in voice and drums, so if you want really solid technique and discipline, these are my two strongest areas to deliver. I learned how to play guitar and bass because whenever my bandmates were out of town, I couldn't record anything, so now I can be my own band! Because I couldn't afford lessons for five instruments, I had to settle with teaching myself. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start by creating a strong foundation in the student's mind of why they want to learn how to play an instrument and what goals, if any, they initially have for themselves. I then utilize this to help create individual based lesson plans that are driven by the inner workings of the student's mind. I incorporate music theory into every instrument at every skill level because I believe it to be something that is extremely important to understand and that not a lot of students are exposed to before they get to college. For younger students, I tend to make learning the guitar more enjoyable and fun. Since younger kids need motivation, I prefer to let them play with accompaniment in order to make the lesson and their playing more enjoyable. For more advanced students, I believe that introducing them to variety of music styles is essential to build their musical personality and let them decide what style they want to learn. Finally, I encourage my students to perform in public, so they can build their confidence and realize the great outcome of their hard work. Read More

I began teaching over three years ago, after many years of playing instruments solo and in groups. I teach in most styles of guitar, and also beginner piano and bass guitar. I also love teaching music theory and consider it to be an essential part of any music lesson. I taught extensively for a music store in New York and after returning to Madison recently, I am looking to continue my work as a music teacher. Read More
