For students that want to sharpen their technique and sound, I use the "Gary Chaffee Method". Students who are concerned about changing their sound I put them on a regimen of drummers to dissect and listen to, so they can incorporate them into their own style. Students that are more concerned about playing songs and getting better at other styles of music, I use some of my own methods that I have customized for those particular students whether they want to play in a wedding band, a stadium, or a tavern or bar. Sometimes that means working out of a book...there are many great drum books. We can work together to find the one that is right for you. About the time I started a family, I consolidated my teaching, opening a home studio while maintaining my position at the boarding school. Since 2006 I have taught every year in a summer arts program for gifted and talented youth, only taking off the summer of 2013 while on maternity leave. While I do recommend my beginning students start with a classical foundation, I also teach a variety of contemporary commercial music (CCM) styles including pop, Music Theatre, and country, among others. I began teaching guitar in high school to middle school students and continued teaching children and adults throughout college. While in music college, I grew to start to teaching bass guitar as well as drums. My teaching style is focused yet fun. Me and my students always have a good time through my curriculum of theory and how it relates to music they enjoy. It offers simple, effective patterns for developing technique, skill, and vocabulary. It can be used intensively or casually as we borrow concepts and patterns to work with. Rudiments are the foundation of quality drumming and they can be developed using this book as well. Read More
