Instruments:

Nicholas has been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others. From there he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method under Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass. His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A TIGHT GROOVE!!!After a year in Chicago, where he was enrolled as a student in the Columbia College school of Music as a jazz studies student, he dropped out and returned to Detroit to pursue a career as a fulltime musician and teacher. His current musical endeavors include work with; Remedy and The Wall Clocks. During his time as a performer he has shared the stage with groups such as; Tesla, Candlebox, Bret Michaels, The Sick Puppies, 3 Doors Down and many others.

I love to teach students the fundamentals of singing, including breathing, posture, and mouth position. These fundamentals stand students in good stead to sing whatever style they choose for the rest of their lives. I have a passion for classical music, including art song, oratorio, and opera. I completed my Master of Arts degree in Voice Performance in 2000. I have performed as a Soprano soloist across the United States in places as diverse as Virginia, Michigan, and Texas.

My style is to review a previous lesson with playing a "homework" etude or study and early on have the student pay close attention to dynamics. I like to encourage younger students and challenge the more advanced students to think in terms of musical interpretations based on what the composer is trying to convey.

My teaching style is fun and effective. I find that a huge percentage of issues people face are themselves, so I employ fun techniques to overcome obstacles. An example would be a student I currently have who gets tense as she approaches higher notes- I will have her toss a ball back and forth as a distraction technique and it's amazing that a beautiful, free high note come right out! I meet every student where they are at. For example, in my younger students- they are required to learn music theory. However, if I know they have exams coming up or something I will let them pause the theory book until they have time to resume it.
