Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so too does every lesson that Nicholas gives. In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student. Being musical is inherent to being human, so when a students’ musical abilities fail to progress, it is the teaching method that has failed, not the student. While my educational background allows me to offer my students a high level of instruction in instrumental technique, my first priority with every student is to foster their love and understanding of music through playing their instrument.

I am an enthusiastic and caring teacher who wants to give back to the community as my mentors and teachers gave to me.  A love of music and performance from my younger days motivated me to enroll in choir and seek experiences outside of school that would give me the education I sought.  My involvement with a show choir and extensive solo work led to a pursuit of studies in jazz and classical literature. I graduated with honors from Oakland University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education.  I performed in local bands and recorded professionally in the studio after college. Today, I am still a working performer in a vocal/guitar duo.

I began teaching for a local studio in 1974.  I taught trumpet and flute (13 students to begin).  Since that time I have taught music to referrals from friends and family.  In the last 25 years I have had the opportunity to learn in small group settings (from duo to 15 "voice" big band).  In teaching others I draw from my experience playing/singing with various groups in the Detroit area (and short tours).  I believe that students need a strong foundation (I like to share about these experiences with students whenever possible).

During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. After the first lesson we choose music: a classical art song book and theory book of my choosing, and a songbook of the student's choosing. During future lessons we warm-up, have fun and sing, and troubleshoot issues for improvement.

For beginner's I tend to start with lesson books, especially Hal Leonard's Essential Elements because that's what I learned from! I move up from there and like to teach lessons from all different types of genre's and also teach different techniques such as vibrato, jazz flute, etc. Scales and warm-up's are an essential part of every lesson and I always do them no matter what age student I am teaching! I will ask for the student's feedback and make sure that I am giving them the best possible lessons and helping them reach their goals!
