To me it is very important to balance the technical and creative aspects of development. No matter what age/skill level I split time during lessons into activities that develop technique and language, and compositional, creative activities that help each student explore their instrument and what they have to say with it. This balance can be altered depending on the interests of the student or parent. Music making and teaching has been my passion since I was young. In 2020, I graduated from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education. As a child, I participated in choir for 8 years and was in the University of Michigan's University Choir and Orpheus Singers. I began taking private voice lessons at a late age (17 years old) and became a professional musician, so I know that it is possible to be successful even when starting later in life! Read More

Hello future students! I much enjoy sharing my experience as a creative musician to my students whether they are 5 or 55, beginner or advanced. I am a patient teacher and do my best to encourage each student to find themselves as unique learners (musicians) unto themselves. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 with a BA focus on Music Composition. While recently living in NYC, I formed a 12-member saxophone orchestra, composed and recorded two symphonies, performed and recorded with the late Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Ensemble, and provided live Sound Design for renowned poetess Anne Carson. During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. After the first lesson we choose music: a classical art song book and theory book of my choosing, and a songbook of the student's choosing. Read More

I like to give fun, free feeling lessons. While I go into each lesson with a goal in mind, I enjoy going on brief tangents for life lessons, performance tips, or applicable and funny stories. I am known to be very animated and energetic as a teacher and I have learned that students feed off of this energy, allow us to be more productive which results in outcomes that are significantly greater. I like to focus on fundamentals and excellent musical character before working into repertoire and I have had a great deal of success with my students, having used this approach. For children, I do not use books or complicate bibliography to teach. I encourage children to discover music through their own curiosity. Using historical imagery and references of the natural world that surrounds us, is very effective way to help children understand music. Art contains emotion and intellect, so, my intention is that the kids explore that knowledge in a fun and joyful way. For adults, the teaching process is more focus to expand their abilities.
