Overview:
.I love sharing my love of music with others. I offer voice lessons for adults of any age and children age 8 and up. Learning to sing with artistry using good technique is the heart of what I teach, and you don't have to have any previous experience or training I studied Voice Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of the internationally acclaimed Mezzo-Soprano, Marie Simmelink-Kraft who was a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and other Symphony Orchestras throughout the world. I hold a degree from Case Western Reserve University where I studied art and music theory. My professional experience includes singing with a Chorale that performed with the Cleveland Symphony and performances as a soloist with choirs in Ohio and Michigan. I founded and was the director of the Academie des Beaux-Arts, a performing arts school and the Actors Alliance Theatre, a professional theater company that gave young people a chance to perform with professional actors. I use positive teaching methods that help students make music using good technique, become more expressive, develop self-confidence, and a voice with a beautiful sound that you will love. The technique that you will learn is the foundation for singing any genre or style of music from Bach to Pop to Broadway. The vocal exercises are fun to do and very effective. Students make progress beginning with the first lesson. If you want to be a better singer or dream of a career in music, I would like to help you become the musician you want to be and experience the joy of making music.
EXPERIENCE
Sharing my love of music has always been a big part of my life. I studied Voice Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music and have a degree from Case Western Reserve University where I studied Art and Music Theory performed in University theatre productions. I have more than two decades of experience teaching beginning students age 13 and up and adults how to a sing using good technique that builds a strong healthy voice. This gives you the foundation you need to sing music from Bach and Mozart to Folk and Pop or Broadway-style music from shows like Cats and Hamilton. My experience in professional theater sets me apart as a teacher who can help students develop artistry, and sing expressively to touch the hearts of those who listen. I use positive teaching methods that build self-confidence and the ability to be completely natural on stage. If you love music and want to be a better singer, I would like to help you experience the joy of making music and sharing it with others.
METHODS USED
Classic singing technique and stage performance training are at the heart of what I teach to students of all ages. The combination of skills voice and theater skills that I have set me apart as a teacher who can help singers feel completely natural on stage, more self-confident and at ease as they perform. Some young children like to sing andhave beautiful natural voices, so I offer training for young singers that is different from the kind of training that is offered for adults. Young children literally have a small voice so they cannot produce the same volume or quality of sound as an adult. For young children that are ready to start training, the lessons are structured to avoid straining the voice. The music chosen for young students is age-appropriate, lyric-appropriate and within the range of a young voice. I accompany my students on the piano and can transpose music that a child likes to a key that is easier for them to sing. I work towards developing a healthy singing technique for all students and the ability to sing with artistry and expression. The lessons are fun and effective. You can expect to see some improvement in technique after the first lesson.
LESSON STYLE
Helping someone learn how to open up their voice and sing is a joyful experience. Every lesson includes a warm-up for the voice and a series of breathing and vocal exercises. that build skills and technique. The time spent on each part of the lesson varies from student to student to help them make progress. Recognizing their accomplishments helps students identify what they are doing correctly so they can build on that. Music that builds technique is introduced at a pace that is comfortable for each student. Because every voice is different, all lessons are structured to help students develop their unique voice and distinctive style and sound.

Helen B. taught me for the past year and a half. She was a not only a very good teacher but also very patient. She used several different methods to help me learn if I did not understand the first way. I learned how to do exercises to make sure I enunciated properly and could sing without using too much breath. She always encouraged me when I felt like I had not done as well as I wanted to do. Using these techniques, I learned something every lesson. I highly recommend Helen B. as a voice teacher for anyone who wants to learn how to sing. She is the one that you are looking for. ~ Patricia D.
