Iencourage students learn what I find is important for them to progress and eventually teach themselves, but I make sure not to exceed the pace of the individual student. At the same time, I make sure that the students are learning something that they consider enjoyable. I might ask if there is a particular song or style they are interested in learning. Though scales and exercises are important, the benefit of practicing these things is often not experienced until long in the future, causing the student to lose motivation. Read More

For beginning students, I focus on building a solid foundation of vocal technique (including: breath, resonance, posture, register, and diction). We build this foundation through singing pieces that the student is familiar with and lots of vocal exercises. At the same time, I like to introduce basic music theory concepts. I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Theory. Upon grasping and understanding fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire from different styles of music. Read More

My teaching style is very diagnostic and understanding. I love seeing my students explore their interests in music and giving them the tools to succeed in the process. I do believe it is my job as a teacher to ensure the student is enjoying what they are doing! I like to reinforce basic techniques at all times so we are always building upon fundamentals to overcome any challenges faced in learning new pieces. Read More
Instruments: Violin
My teaching style is more relaxed and less strict than other teachers, especially for beginner students, though I do emphasize the importance of consistent practice and listening. I believe that not only practicing, but also listening to what you are practicing, especially, pieces is very important for the development of the musical ear. When teaching, I like to have the student practice and play many examples from the book that is being used, especially if they are short examples. Read More

My name is Rene, I am a flute player and music lover. Music for me is an outlet and a way to express myself. I've been playing flute since I was 13, and music has given me a lot while growing up. Music taught me discipline, it gave me self confidence, brought me friends, taken me to places, and helped me understand myself better. After training as a flute performer at University of California Santa Barbara, I traveled to China and taught students and played at various events. Read More
