Instruments: Piano
I have been teaching piano for 8 years, and have experience teaching children as well as adults. My youngest student was 5 and my oldest 73. My experience has taught me that it is important to be flexible depending on individual students' learning styles and needs. For example, if I have a young student and they don't know how to read music, we will play rhythm clapping games so they can understand how to read rhythm rather than trying to read rhythm and play the rhythms at the piano, simultaneously. I like to use piano methods that employ the multi-key and intervallic approach to teaching piano. Alfred's Piano Method nicely blends these two methods. To keep book costs down, the Alfred's All-in-One Piano Method (children's or adult's) is a good choice for beginning students. Alfred's method is also used by many universities and community colleges, so what you learn will nicely carry over to that environment. More advanced students can bring the method and materials they have been working with and we'll go from there. Read More

For beginners, I start off with the basics. For example, naming each string on the guitar, curvature of the fingers, embouchure on the headjoint of a flute, and achieving a crow on an oboe reed. For school age children, I use books or sheet music used in their own practice at school or Youth Orchestras during lessons. For any ability level, I use any materials during lessons that my students want to work on that achieves their goals but also keeps them motivated. Read More

My teaching style is built on a foundation of encouragement and self-improvement. For a student to truly progress, he or she needs to be inspired and that's what my job is mostly about. I take great pride in being able to motivate and push students to want to get better on their own time, with the lesson time being available for learning new skills and techniques. Always being positive, even in criticism, is important to me. Read More

I've found that with any instrument, its important to pick music that stretches you, but also music that the student likes or loves to keep them interested and engaged. It can sometimes be hard work, so it's important that the result is you either accomplishing a goal and that could be in technic or learning a song that you love. Even if the student wants to work on improve, we can figure out a song that they enjoy, or have wanted to play along with for a long time, and we can build a track of that song for them to practice too. I pride myself on catering to each individuals need and desire. I do give every student the same basic foundation, but after the foundation is set, the continued direction is entirely up to the student [parent]. In previous years, I've had students who wanted to be the next Beyonce, some who need better technique, and some who just wanted to build upon what they already had. Whatever the student's desire, it's my job, and my pleasure to see that it comes to fruition. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar Music
My teaching experience dates back to 1995, I have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 25 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of jazz and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the bass guitar and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
