I've always found that my students who seem to have the most fun are the ones who progress the fastest, so my primary method is to approach lessons with material that students are interested in. I try to keep things fun and interesting by doing things such as incorporating a student's favorite music into a lesson. It's important for a student to practice regularly with discipline and focus. However based on my experience, nothing propels a student forward faster than the happiness and satisfaction gained from 'nailing' a new lick or figuring out a cool new trick. Read More

Anyone can look up tutorials or guitar tabs on where to put your fingers to play a particular song, but most people don't know how to understand the underlying relationships so as to manipulate those sounds in your own way. That's the basis for songwriting, composition, learning new songs quickly and improvisation. This process truly demystifies music no matter what instruments you'd like to play. I also employ ear training via the solfege system (moveable Do) to help folks who want to be able to identify things by ear and improvise more fluently. Read More

For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between keeping the student working on music that challenges them, and advances their technique, with the need to have fun and enjoy the playing of a musical instrument as a means of entertainment and relaxation. While there is no "One-size-fits-all" for all students, I start most students off with Essential Elements or Suzuki. As they progress I try to include pieces they like, pop songs, and different genres. The variety helps them stay engaged, learn a bit about different styles to broaden their knowledge, but also, have fun. As they get intermediate levels the paths diverge. Some of my students are doing Jazz improvisation, some of them, composition, and others are getting ready to audition for college. Read More

Being able to teach others and share my knowledge is what drives me, so I like to see progress. I have a goal-oriented approach that differs depending on the individual, but the results are always there. I love feeling the satisfaction of a student learning. Not to mention the relationships that are built and how much I learn from them in turn! It truly is a give and take relationship, just another individual sharing experience and knowledge. Read More

I meet the student's needs and structure the curriculum accordingly. I have books and resources, as well as recommended YouTube videos to to prepare for lessons. I'm a proponent of Positive Feedback and have training in Responsive Classroom.
