I began teaching private lessons while in college, teaching classical, electric and acoustic guitar. For the past 5 years that I have been in Nashville I have been teaching again for the last 2. I have experience in teaching students as young as 5 and as old as 65. There is no age limit on learning! Something I was always told in my lessons both, as a teenager and in college was that it is vastly more important to practice a little each day than to try and cram a marathon session into one day. I have used many different methods over the years and will supplement any method book to meet the individual needs of the student. My preferred method for young students is the FJH Harris Young Beginner's Guitar Method series. For older students I tend to use either Mel Bay or Hal Leonard methods to teach the fundamentals and then add onto them with whatever suits the student best. For advanced students I prefer the William Leavitt methods from Berklee University Press, which will be a challenge for anyone! Read More

Music is fun, no matter how tedious the learning process may be. With practice and determination, a student will be able to progress and love their instrument even more. Each week we will determine realistic goals for the student. If progress is made, I may come up with something creative ways to reward my students for their work. As long as I inspire and touch the lives of my students, I will feel rewarded as well. Read More

I've found that with any instrument, its important to pick music that stretches you, but also music that the student likes or loves to keep them interested and engaged. It can sometimes be hard work, so it's important that the result is you either accomplishing a goal and that could be in technic or learning a song that you love. Even if the student wants to work on improve, we can figure out a song that they enjoy, or have wanted to play along with for a long time, and we can build a track of that song for them to practice too. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music ! Therefore its important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for each student. Acknowledging accomplishments help fuel a students desire to progress. I tailor lessons to the students level as well as there interest in music. Many of my students have gone on to become professionals or involved in their church, school or community music programs. Every student is different, but all students need to be motivated and inspired. I try to find the right “buttons” for each individual to help them become excited about learning their instrument. I approach my teaching with enthusiasm, patience and realistic but high expectations. I want my students to feel comfortable and safe and be able to make mistakes without fear or embarrassment. Music is supposed to bring joy, not stress. Read More
