For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has started to grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I do try to maintain a balance of classical music, modern music, and music theory. Read More

Typically, I begin with regimented learning. For guitar students, I use Hal Leonards Guitar Method 1. For voice students, I teach basic breathing exercises and fun, sustainable and memorable warm-ups. From there, I begin to prep them for their first solo performances. I offer studio-wide performance opportunities for new and experienced students to show off their skills! As they progress, I teach to their interests and needs. Some students may be in high school prepping for Solo and Ensemble, or All-State Chorus auditions, or even college auditions. Read More

An Effective Teacher Needs to Practice What They Preach. A good educator must first have mastered their art and studied the principles underlying human development to fully understand how to teach someone the art of music. This goes far beyond replicating your musical history, or relaying what you think was the right path when you first learnt music. My teaching experience started when I was in High School. I began tutoring other players in the high school Jazz band and Orchestra on one on one lessons for the instructors. At the same time I began taking on students of all levels and ages for piano, guitar, and violin. I maintained a large roster of students until I was 23 and my touring schedule became too busy to continue to have that many students. Read More

I'm a performer/composer who comes from a line of professional arts educators. Both my parents and one of my grandmothers are lifelong teachers in musical theater and modern dance respectively. I've learned a huge amount from them not only about my art form but about the skills required to be a good teacher, regardless of topic. Teaching is truly its own set of skills separate from the topic that someone is teaching, and treating this job as such is the difference between someone simply demonstrating skills and actually being a thoughtful teacher. To me, the most important part of music is listening. For my beginners, what chord is happening is this song? How do I play that chord? How do I remember all the chords to this song? I will encourage my more advanced students to listen to the masters, as well as their own playing. What is the master player doing in this recording? How can the student apply that same concept in their own playing? Read More
