Music inspires every human being in some capacity. Not everybody can appreciate all genres of music. While there are melodies and harmonies that are pivitol for creating a strong foundation as a musician, I prefer to work with the student in a genre that will inspire the student to want to practice. If there is desire to practice, the student will continue to grow musically. Therefore, I don't want to force a student to play Mozart when it might be the music of Bruce Hornsby that inspires the student to live another day and vice versa. Read More

I'm a lifelong teacher. I always knew teaching was what I wanted to do. My first guinea pig was my little brother, who's seven years younger than I. I've always been able to relate to all ages and all types of people. I've taught in a variety of settings: Schools, music stores and my own independent studio. I really enjoy seeing the light bulb go off in a student's head. Read More

Much of my training techniques come from my experience with Voice Teacher, Dr. Joseph Collins (PhD, Vocal Pedagogy), whom I studied with while living in Nashville. Dr. Collins made clear to me many secrets to developing proper vocal execution and placement that had been a mystery before. I gained much more awareness and understanding of my own voice. I have enjoyed many years of private vocal instruction while at universities (Kent State University, Belmont University) and have learned good and valuable practices from different professors. For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. I try and encourage what they are more comfortable with. For adults, I try to find out what genre of music they enjoy and try to gauge their ability level with a couple playing evaluations. Read More

My number 1 goal as an instructor is to assess the needs and goals of the student, and to assist the student in reaching these goals while fostering a fun environment. Nothing is more important than finding your own personal passion, and making sure that your pursuit of your goals remains an enjoyable process. I know that studying music takes years of dedication and steady practice, so I work hard to find songs and styles that suit the student. Read More

I like to spend the first lesson figuring out what the student knows so that I can formulate lesson plans that are relevant and chronological. Once a rapport is established, I introduce material that is both accessible and challenging and help the student work through the music. First we work on playing the right notes and rhythms, then we add musicality and expression. Read More
