I started teaching music about 10 years ago, and Ive always enjoyed working with students. Ive performed professionally in several bands on multiple instruments in the past 10 years, and Ive also done a good bit of studio work from composition and recording, to producing, to mastering. I emphasize practice, having fun, and learning useful skills as the keys to success in music lessons. An Effective Teacher Needs to Practice What They Preach. A good educator must first have mastered their art and studied the principles underlying human development to fully understand how to teach someone the art of music. This goes far beyond replicating your musical history, or relaying what you think was the right path when you first learnt music. I start with students by asking them what they want to accomplish on whatever instrument we're working on, and that will change the way the lessons progress. After the basics, if they want to study classical music, contemporary, or just strengthen the basic skills they have, then we progress from there. This could mean sticking to Hal Leonard books, learning songs, diving deeply into theory, or understanding the world of improvisation. Read More

It is important that every student learns and improves at their own pace because everyone learns differently. So I break down songs and theory in to increments so that they can be more easily digested over time. I find that this method of learning is extremely helpful in the retention of the knowledge the student learns. Also not all students are interested in learning the same things so I think it is very important to find out what the student wants to learn and gain from playing music and what their expectations for themselves are. My teaching experience dates back to high school, when I was a surfing instructor in Huntington Beach, California. I love helping people achieve their goals. I starting teaching music after graduating from college in 2010, when I trained to become a professional Vocal Coach at Songbird Studios in San Francisco. I fell in love with teaching vocal technique, performance skills, and songwriting to a wide age range of students--as young as 6 and as old at 75! Read More
