I am enthusiastic about teaching others both how to play and understand the art of music. In 2009 I graduated from North Central University where I truly fell in live with music and gained a passion for learning and performing through both my education and the rich Fine Arts culture in the city of Minneapolis where I studied. Since graduating, performing professionally has been a wonderful experience and tantamount to my ongoing growth as a musician. I have had the experience of performing in all sorts of venues domestically and abroad from small clubs and churches to a 360 stage in the U.S. Airways Arena as well as Malaysia, Thailand, and South America.
I began teaching during my college career providing free lessons through a University sponsored program to underprivilaged young people in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. I volunteered there for 5 years and fell in love with imparting young people with a deeper understanding and appreciation of music. Starting in 2006, after learning some key ideas of pedagogy from my private instructor, I began taking on private students of my own and teaching lessons professionally. I have had students as young as 9 who were just beginning their own musical journey as well as students in their 60's with a passion for continued growth
For new learners I always start with an introduction to the instrument i.e. its makeup, terminologies, history etc . . . and printed material to help the student acheive an understanding of the fundamentals of the instrument. For Intermediate/Adult learners, I will get to know whath he/she is looking to learn or what area they want to grow in and plan the lessons accordingly.
The most important aspect of pedagogy which, I have learned from my own experience, is that music is best learned through MUSIC! I will always work with the student to find out what they want to play and teach through that style and those pieces; theory and technique are inherent to music from pop to classical and everything in between! I will also work with the student on expanding their own musical horizons and hopefully discover new music together with them
